Non-violence is the product of a peaceful heart aligned with God’s purpose for one’s life. Toward the end of his life, Gandhi bemoaned the fact that he had “made a mistake of Himalayan magnitude” in not realizing the the people suffered from “imperfect ahisma,” the desire in their hearts not to do any harm to others. Their failure to substitute, in their hearts, “the law of love in society for the law of the jungle” made their non-violent behavior during the struggle with England unsustainable. It is sadly ironic that Gandhi was assassinated by a fundamentalist Hindu who felt that Gandhi was betraying the Hindus by trying to make peace with the Muslims. It is further sad and ironic that his assassin was hanged, when, throughout his life, Gandhi opposed capital punishment. Before non-violence can be sustainable, people have to evolve into a new consciousness of their unity with each other and with every vibration in the universe, and they have to become receptive to Divine Love and become vehicles of Divine Love for others. They have to become what I call Christ conscious leaders.

Certainly, those who are already Christ conscious leaders are role models for others, and, as you state so eloquently, we can look to this “lineage” of non-violent struggle for inspiration and strength. At the same time, we have to continue to work toward transforming the consciousness of people so that non-violence becomes a sustainable approach to interacting with each other and building the future.
